Distinguishing Features
Works with the Division for Intergovernmental Relations & Communications to communicate city policies, services, and public safety information to community groups, block clubs, and other stakeholders.
Receives general supervision from the department/division head.
Exercises independent judgment in planning and executing activities.
Typical Work Activities
Assists the Director of Special Events with scheduling, coordinating, and overseeing all city special events.
Works with community groups planning special events.
Coordinates event activities with various City of Buffalo departments.
Assists with collection of fees related to special events.
Performs clerical duties for disseminating special events information and maintaining the Special Events calendar.
Supports the Special Events Advisory Committee.
Represents the Office of Special Events at events to ensure compliance with city policies.
Performs other related duties as required.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics
Thorough knowledge of city programs, organizations, laws, and ordinances.
Good knowledge of the Special Events process and Advisory Committee function.
Good knowledge of publicity and public relations principles, methods, and techniques.
Ability to plan, schedule, coordinate, and facilitate meetings and events.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with public and private agencies, community organizations, and stakeholders.
Self-motivation, tact, courtesy, and willingness to work unusual hours.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Option A:
Bachelor’s Degree (any major) from an accredited institution and two years full-time experience in special events, event planning, community/group organizing, public administration, or community affairs.
Option B:
Associate’s Degree (any major) from an accredited institution and four years full-time experience in the same fields.
Option C:
High School diploma or GED, at least 60 college credit hours, and six years full-time experience in public administration and community affairs.
Option D:
An equivalent combination of education and experience within the limits of Options A–C.
