DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Director of Engineering Operations oversees the operation of the Division of Engineering and the Mayor’s Impact team through delegation of responsibility to appropriate supervisors and assigned personnel for the day-to-day operations and administration of roadway, bridge, traffic signal and sign, street lighting and other right-of-way features as well as the operation of the Mayor’s Impact Team performing clean-up, graffiti removal and other various duties. The incumbent reports directly to the City Engineer and advises them on the operation of the Engineering Division and the Mayor’s Impact team as well as departmental policies and procedures, however, they exercise considerable independence in developing and carrying out policy decisions and department goals.
Typical Work Activities
Plans, directs, inspects, and reviews operations, maintenance, and repair of the City’s roadway network and associated infrastructure.
Oversees clean-up of illegal dumping, graffiti removal, and private property remediation when ordered by a court.
Coordinates with departmental supervisors to plan and implement work programs.
Coordinates with other government agencies on cooperative service agreements and activities.
Develops and implements departmental budgets, including forecasting staffing, equipment, and material needs, as well as securing funding from federal, state, and local sources (grants, legislation, etc.).
Oversees requisition of materials, supplies, equipment, and other departmental expenditures.
Advises the City Engineer regarding developments and operational improvements.
Required to travel to various work locations.

Ability to develop departmental policies and procedures.

Physical condition appropriate for the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Option 1: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Service Administration, Engineering, or related field plus five years of full-time experience including supervision of subordinate employees.
Option 2: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent plus seven years of full-time experience in Public Service Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field, including five years supervising subordinate employees.
Special Requirements
Possession of a current New York State Driver’s License at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
