Distinguishing Features of the Class
The Special Assistant supports the Commissioner by performing project-oriented tasks, conducting research, preparing reports, and handling high-level confidential matters. The incumbent advises and updates the Commissioner on various issues, carries out administrative tasks, and helps implement departmental strategies. Work is primarily project-based with specific outcomes and deadlines. No supervisory responsibilities are included. The position reports directly to the Commissioner and may require a flexible schedule.
Typical Work Activities
Perform duties in a confidential capacity as directed by the Commissioner.
Assist in developing and implementing departmental strategies and initiatives.
Conduct research, compile, analyze, and verify data; prepare statistical reports; and make recommendations based on findings.
Review and analyze local, state, and federal legislation affecting the department; prepare summaries and reports; and recommend positions on pending legislation.
Correspond with other governmental jurisdictions and outside agencies regarding departmental matters.
Prepare data and reports for presentation to the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority and other agencies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (any major).

$52,045
